Learning by doing

All teaching activities offered by the International Academy for Advanced Technologies in High-Performance Vehicles and Engines share a “learning by doing” approach. The two projects that are currently active and best reflect this technical and practical approach philosophy are Formula Student and Moto Student, undertaken by the “ MoRe Modena Racing ” and “Impulse Modena Racing” respectively.

The “Formula Student” and “Moto Student” projects are an activity integrated in the teaching offering of the Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree Programmes. The activity is recognised to those students who demonstrate an actual involvement in the project and are therefore assigned a suitable number of university credits (CFUs).

These projects are an extraordinary opportunity for the students involved, as they can consolidate the theoretical studies through a hand-on experience, working in a context very similar to a company environment in terms of operation. People in the team learn how to work in a group, set and meet objectives and deadlines, and deal with suppliers. That will teach them not only to acquire new skills, but also to be better prepared when entering the job market.

Formula Student team: MoRe Modena Racing

Formula Student is an engineering design competition for students. Students work together in teams to design and manufacture a prototype racecar, based on a hypothetical manufacturing contract, with which they can compete against teams from all over the world. The competition is not won solely by the team with the fastest car, but rather by the team with the best overall package of construction, performance, and financial and sales planning, making Formula Student an incredible experience of professional and personal growth.

MoRe Modena Racing was founded in 2003, in the heart of the Italian Motor Valley. Today the team includes more than 150 students, that everyday draw inspiration of this land and turn it into motivation. Besides the Engineering Department, students came from several others Departments of the University: economics, law, marketing and communication etc., confirming the educational significance of the Formula Student project. Formula Student challenges the team members to go the extra step in their education by incorporating into it intensive experience in building and manufacturing as well as considering the economic aspects of the automotive industry. Students working in 6 divisions, each division develops a different aspect of the car: structures, powertrain , electronics, dynamics, aerodynamics, business.
The actual prototype of MMR team is called “M17-L”, a car with an unique design, which includes a mould free carbon panel monocoque and an high performance longitudinal engine (750 cc, 100 bhp) with bevel gear transmission combined with in-house produced aeropack, bodyshell and electronic elements.

MoRe Modena Racing looks also to the future: the team intends to grow up looking at the perspective of the automotive world. Form this year MMR intends to starts two new project beyond the combustion car: the Hybrid and the Driverless one.

Moto Student team: Impulse Modena Racing

Moto Engineering Foundation & TechnoPark MotorLand promote the MotoStudent International Competition, a challenge between University Student teams all over the world.

In this competition, students apply all the knowledge acquired during their university studies to a real industrial project, as they are asked to design, develop and manufacture a real racing motorbike prototype, which is then evaluated and tested in Motorland Aragón FIM Circuit.

MotoStudent itself represents a challenge to the students, who have to prove their creativity and innovation skills by directly applying their engineering abilities and compete against other teams from universities all over the world during a period of three semesters. In 2016, at the Enzo Ferrari Department of Engineering the “Impulse Modena Racing” team was created (www.impulsemodenaracing.it) and was made of students from the University of Modena working in the designing and manufacturing of a electric racing motorcycle. The IMR team will participate to their first race during the 2017-18 season.
